AUSTRALIAN WATER DRAGON


CHARACTERISTICS
Including the tail, which represents around two thirds of its total length, the females grow some 60cm in length and adult males can grow more than a metre and weigh around 1 Kg. The males show more vivid colouring and have larger heads than the females.
DIET
Insects, frogs, river lobsters, water insects, fruits and berries
REPRODUCTION
Hibernation during the winter. During the spring, generally around the beginning of October, the female digs a burrow of around 10 - 15 depth and places between 6 and 8 eggs in it. The sex of the offspring will be determined by the temperature of the nest.
CURIOSITIES
In the event of a potential predator they are able to swim completely submerged, along the bottom of shallow streams or lakes, for up to 90 minutes.
