MUNTJAC


CHARACTERISTICS
It has chestnut coloured plumage with a 10cm tail, which is black at the top and white at the bottom. The females tend to be slightly lighter than the males. They also have shorter horns. They are some 45 cm tall.
DIET
Omnivorous, it feeds on bamboo seeds, bark, fruit and foliage, but it also eats eggs and carrion and can hunt small mammals and birds which nest on the ground.
REPRODUCTION
The males have a territory that superimposes that of the females. They will defend this territory against other males using their teeth and not their horns or antlers.
CURIOSITIES
There are populations in England which were introduced at the beginning of the XX century for hunting purposes.
