
- CHARACTERISTICS
- The Demoiselle Crane is the smallest of all cranes, measuring some 90 cm. in height. It has a wingspan of 160 to 180 cm.
A total population of more than 200,000 individuals is estimated.
It is a migratory species.
- DIET
- Green parts of plants, seeds, insects and other invertebrates. In summer, above all, they may consume the odd small vertebrate.
- REPRODUCTION
- It nests on the ground.
It barely builds a nest, just depositing the eggs on the ground.
The clutch usually consists of two eggs.
Incubation takes 27 to 30 days.
- CURIOSITIES
- The numerous group that winters in India has to pass over the high Himalayas, a feat it must repeat on the return to the breeding grounds. During this flight it must fly at altitudes of 5,000 to 8,000 metres. That is the height at which modern planes fly.
