COMMON CRANE


CHARACTERISTICS
It is migratory, breeding in Northern Europe and Russia and wintering in the south of the Mediterranean basin, reaching as far as Sudan. Its body is grey, dark on the back; black face and neck; and large, dark, heavy feet. In flight, it has straight, flat wings and a very characteristic long neck.
DIET
It feeds on roots, insect larvae, seeds and fruit.
REPRODUCTION
They build their nests on the ground and both male and female incubate. The chicks are capable of walking and feeding themselves from birth, although always under the protection of their parents until they are two months old.
CURIOSITIES
The migration routes do not vary and they always fly over the same places; during migration, they fly at 50 km/h., in “V” formations or in large oblique lines.
