
- CHARACTERISTICS
- “Armour-plated” mammal, their bodies consists of a layer of hard rings.
In not having skin, they cannot withstand very low temperatures.
On their feet they have claws similar to nails which permit them to dig the ground in order to create their burrows
- DIET
- It hunts insects and larvae, although it may on occasions eat vegetable material.
- REPRODUCTION
- The female may have litters of up to 12 young, which will remain in the burrow until they reach the age required to fend for themselves.
The young are suckled by the mother until they learn to capture insects.
- CURIOSITIES
- In the Andean nations, their “shell” is used to manufacture a musical instrument, the charango, similar to a guitar.
It is also used to make women’s purses.
It is much appreciated as a food, in the Yucatan peninsula it is served in the most expensive restaurants as an exotic dish.
