HOFFMAN’S TWO-TOED SLOTH

CHARACTERISTICS
The sloths, as their names imply, are characterised by being slow in their movements, and generally pass the majority of their time in the treetops where they avoid their predators and obtain food and water. They have extremely thick skin.
DIET
Vegetable material from where they obtain solid food and water. They tend to be seen up Sapium laurifolium and have a frugivorous diet.
REPRODUCTION
Their period of gestation is 11 and a half months. The sole offspring of the sloth remains fastened on to the fur of the mother until it can fend for itself, which is 20 to 25 days after birth.
CURIOSITIES
An extremely slow digestion is why they descend from the treetops approximately once a week to defecate. Their body temperature varies depending on the environment they are in, ranging from 24º – 33º C. In their fur they grow algae which can give them a green-brown colour, helping them to remain camouflaged.
