- Body of white to cream colour, crossed vertically by light and dark brownish-red stripes; the eyes remain hidden within the pattern.
It has a rounded body, very long fins of separate radii which can unfold making the fish appear much bigger than it really is
It can reach up to 40 cm.

- They have external fertilisation and the eggs are carried by the current forming part of the plankton, likewise the larvae during the first few days.

- They have venomous glands in grooves located along the sides of each of the spines on the dorsal, anal and ventral fins, which can be lethal for human beings.
They are a defensive mechanism that the animal uses when it feels cornered or attacked.
