KING PENGUIN

CHARACTERISTICS
Their chest is a yellowy orange colour and bordered by a black line, with their back embroidered grey, going down to the tail. It is the second largest penguin in the world after the Emperor Penguin. They measure from 91 to 95 cm.
DIET
Krill, small fish...
REPRODUCTION
They nest in the islands off South America. The nesting season begins during the austral spring, in November, after moulting. Quite similar to the rest of the penguins, they tend to make their nests with rocks and in the event of snow they are capable of incubating the egg between the gut and the feet, making a fold in the skin.
CURIOSITIES
They live up to twenty years in their natural state. They can withstand up to 18 minutes underwater thanks to their slow heart rate. When the breeding process of the King Penguin was still unknown, zoologists upon seeing the chicks on their own, still in downy feathers, thought they were a different species of penguin. The penguin chick’s down is coffee-coloured.
