
- CHARACTERISTICS
- Its common name comes from its characteristic golden fringe between the eyes. It is a coastal species, and can even be found in estuaries.
Adults reach up to 70 cm in length and weigh 1 or 2 kg. They have a compact body on both sides.
The colour of the back is blue-green, with a silvery belly and yellowish-grey flanks.
- DIET
- It feeds principally from fish, crustaceans and molluscs which it uncovers with its tail. On occasions it also eats algae and green marine plants.
- REPRODUCTION
- It is a protrandic hermaphrodite species; in other words, they are males when they are born until they reach around 2 years of age and from the age of three onwards they become mature females.
Around a million fertilised eggs are laid at a time.
- CURIOSITIES
- It is one of the species par excellence in marine aquaculture. And it is of note in sports fishing.
The first row of teeth is made up of 4, 5 or 6 sharp canine teeth, attached to strong jaws. The molars are located behind the canines, in 4 or 5 rows.
