They show evident sexual dimorphism, the rooster males are bigger, measuring around 50 cm and weighing up to 4 Kg. And they have a red crest on their heads.
Chickens are smaller. They do not tend to measure more than 50cm and barely reach 2Kg. in weight. They have less attractive colouring, aimed at providing them with protection and camouflage within their habitat
- DIET
- Herbivorous and insectivore.
- REPRODUCTION
- The breeding season begins in spring and lasts until the summer, so that the chicks are born in the summer.
The chickens lay one egg a day for a number of days (between 8 and 10) during which the embryo develops, and they will incubate it until it is born, giving it warmth and rotating its position.
After 21 days the chick is completely developed and ready to break the shell, which can take 10 to 20 hours.
- CURIOSITIES
- The domestic chicken is perhaps the most numerous bird on the planet, as it is estimated that there are in excess of 13.000 million specimens.
Roosters and chickens are principally bred for their meat and their eggs. Their feathers are also used, and some varieties are bred and trained for use as fighting cocks
