CHARACTERISTICS
The males have a dark “collar” around their necks. The females have white facial feathers. The young are cinnamon-coloured with a greyish hue. They reach a length of 61 to 67 cm. The males weigh in at 1.3 to 1.6 Kg. And the females, a little smaller, at .9 and 1.5 Kg.
DIET
It feeds from grains and green shoots.
REPRODUCTION
The clutch consists of six to twelve white eggs. The eggs are deposited one each day and incubation begins once the clutch is complete. The mother carries out the incubation, which takes from 27 to 29 days. While the mother incubates, the father remains close and defends her. The squabs can fend for themselves after 55 days.
CURIOSITIES
They show a certain preference for lakes in areas clear of trees, but can be seen in any expanse of fresh or saltwater up to 4500 metres altitude above sea level. They normally live in pairs or small groups; although in winter they get together in larger numbers, reaching up to thousands of them.
