RED-CRESTED POCHARD


CHARACTERISTICS
In length it can reach from 53 to 58 cm. The males weigh from 0.90 to 1.42 Kg. While females reach .83 to 1.40 Kg. The females are chestnut brown the whole year round on the majority of their bodies, with the lower part of the face and the upper part of the throat white. The males have two different types of plumage throughout the year. The eclipse plumage, for the winter, is very similar to that of the females, although they keep their red bills.
DIET
It feeds from the plants it obtains when submerged.
REPRODUCTION
The clutch consists of 8 to 12 eggs. Incubation takes 26 to 28 days and is carried out by the female. The male leaves when the mother begins to incubate. The squabs fly at around 40 to 50 days old.
CURIOSITIES
It normally remains under the water for six to ten seconds, acquiring its food from two to four metres depth.
