MANDARIN DUCK

CHARACTERISTICS
The Mandarin Duck is a small duck, weighing close to 500 grams. As with many other ducks, the male only exhibits colour during the breeding season. The rest of the year it is quite similar in appearance to the female, which is a browny-grey colour.
DIET
Strict herbivore.
REPRODUCTION
In general they build their nests in tree hollows at a certain height; it is very unusual for them to nest on the ground. Both sexes take part in the incubation of the eggs, with the mother spending the most time sitting on the nest. The clutch consists of 9 to 10 whitish-cream coloured eggs.
CURIOSITIES
As Spring approaches they form into pairs prior to migrating to their nesting sites in Manchuria and China. When a pair breed for two continuous seasons there is a good possibility they will remain together. Once the location has been chosen, the pair defend the area or territory from other members of their species.
