MALLARD

CHARACTERISTICS
The male has a blue-green head, yellow bill, brown or chestnut chest, white collar, grey body and black rear end. The female is of duller dark brown colours. It lives in all types of water (natural or artificial) regardless of size, depth and degree of humanisation. It nests away from the water, in crops or uncultivated land. It can also breed in trees. It happily occupies fluvial flows.
DIET
Herbivorous.
REPRODUCTION
In the breeding season the female lays 3-12 eggs which will hatch after 15-27 days and the female takes care of the young on her own. The young are patchy yellow and brown. They are almost independent from the very first day, they feed themselves and within just 2-3 months they are ready to fly.
CURIOSITIES
It is a very gregarious bird, which rarely allows anyone to come into close contact, normally being the first duck to flee in human presence. They group together to nap during the day and at night they head out to eat. Their great capacity to adapt and take advantage of different food sources, are the reasons for their numerous population, which grows each year.
