MAGELLAN GOOSE


CHARACTERISTICS
It is white with black bars on the back and flank. Black bill and legs in the male. There is sexual dimorphism in the plumage of males and females. The female is chestnut-brown with ochracea head, back and chest striped in black, stomach striped in white and black, brown-grey tail feathers and yellow legs, unlike the male who has black legs. Pink bill.
DIET
Strictly vegetarian, it feeds on soft grasslands and seeds.
REPRODUCTION
It lays between five to eight eggs, taking 30 days to incubate them.
CURIOSITIES
They resort to the protection of water during moulting and breeding. When moulting they tend to lose all of their primary and secondary feathers when flying, they therefore remain unable to fly.
