SEA LION


CHARACTERISTICS
The males reach a length of 2.2 metres, and weight 275 kg. Females can reach up to 1.8 metres, and weigh 90 kg. Their colour ranges from chocolate brown in the males to a lighter golden brown in the females. With their characteristic puppy face, at around five years of age the males develop a bone in the cranium called a saggital crest. They have external ears and large fins with which to walk when out of water.
DIET
Their diet consists of squid, octopus and fish.
REPRODUCTION
Normally they have one pup which weighs around 6 kg when born. The mothers care for the pup for the next 6 to 12 months, in the Galapagos sub-species they look after them for 10 to 12 months. The gestation period lasts 11 months.
CURIOSITIES
They are known for their intelligence, playfulness and loud bark.
