TOCO TOUCAN

CHARACTERISTICS
Males and females are similar and there is no sexual dimorphism. They have black plumage and white neck. The most characteristic feature is the brilliantly coloured beak, very light and like a hollow aerial cavity. They live in small groups composed of various families and form groups of 6 to 12 individuals.
DIET
They eat fruit and animal protein (mice, lizards and other small animals).
REPRODUCTION
The breeding season varies with the area the bird inhabits. It lays between 2-4 white eggs that both parents will incubate. They only breed once a year. The eggs will hatch at 16-20 days. The chicks are covered in light downy feathers.
CURIOSITIES
It likes to play, something which becomes self-evident particularly during the breeding season. The members of the breeding pair fight together with their bills, passing fruit between each other and, after this game, they will come to mating. It is an animal with great presence in the symbology of South American villages, both in their totems and as reincarnations of local healers.
