SQUIRREL MONKEY


CHARACTERISTICS
They measure 26 to 36 cm. With the male being somewhat larger than the female. They can weigh up to 1 Kg. It is the primate that forms the largest groups, with sizes that range between 10 and 40 individuals (but can reach over 300). They show association with the capuchin monkeys, increasing opportunities of seeking food and protection.
DIET
They are omnivores: fruit, berries, nuts, flowers, seeds, leaves, resin, nectar and small vertebrates. If they eat a lot of fruit they lose the fur on the sides of the body.
REPRODUCTION
The breeding period lasts 3 to 4 months. The adult males get fatter and become aggressive. The females copulate with various males. The males do not collaborate with the care of the young but the mother receives help from other females in the group. The gestation period lasts almost 6 months.
CURIOSITIES
They receive the name of “squirrel” because when they sleep they wind up their tale like squirrels. They occupy a territory until they have eaten all the fruit. Up to 26 different vocal calls have been described. They mark with urine.
