SCARLET MACAW


CHARACTERISTICS
Red in colour, with shades of olive green. Yello and blue colouring on the top part of the wings. The forehead and ear coverings are red and the crown, the join and the carpal edge of the wing, the minor lower wing covers and the thighs are orange in colour. The tail is green and blue on the top. They are gregarious birds, that live in groups (of more than 20 individuals) made up of breeding pairs that stay together for life.
DIET
It seeks leaves, fruit, seeds and, only during reproduction, insects and larvae, which provide the chicks with the proteins they need for their development.
REPRODUCTION
The nests, located at great height in tree hollows, are used year after year, including generation after generation. The size of the clutch is of 3 eggs and the incubation period is 26 days. The chicks take 3 months to leave the nest.
CURIOSITIES
Its vivid colouring meant that in remote times it was venerated by the indigenous villages as oracle of the sun and its energy. They have a wide repertory of loud shrieks they emit both in flight and when stationary.
