RED-FOOTED TORTOISE

CHARACTERISTICS
It has a dark shell, except for the aureoles (oldest part of each scale) which are yellow or orangey. Although there may be many variations, the legs and head have red, orange or yellow patches.
DIET
Omnivores with predilection for fruit and vegetables.
REPRODUCTION
The courtship ritual includes movements with the head on the part of the male. At first, the male positions himself next to another tortoise, and moves its head suddenly to one side, then returns it to the centre, repeating this movement. If the other tortoise is a male, it will respond with the same movements and pushing and hitting. If, on the other hand, the other tortoise is a female, it will not respond by moving the head. The male moves to smell her, to confirm she is a female, prior to beginning the mating.
