MARBLED MILK FROG

CHARACTERISTICS
Very common tree-dwelling frog of some 7cm in size with the females being a little larger than the males. It has glands which produce a thick and sticky milky secretion which is highly irritating to the mucosa membranes, and which can cause sneezing in humans, even without direct contact
DIET
Principally invertebrates and occasionally small vertebrates.
REPRODUCTION
Each breeding pair deposits several hundred eggs in the afternoon. The eggs are deposited in one surface layer. The larvae complete their metamorphosis within some 47 days, moment at which the little frogs are 13 to 16mm in length
CURIOSITIES
They reproduce with the summer rains, but in this case they are especially dependent on strong rains before beginning to breed. Large gatherings of frogspawn are found in temporary puddles in which the males call from the surface of the water or from within holes to amplify their call, with the objective of attracting females.
