COTTONTOP TAMARIN

CHARACTERISTICS
They have a crest of long white hair from the forehead to the nape of the neck, falling down over the shoulders. They have claws instead of nails on all digits. The length of the body is 20 to 25 cm. Their weight oscillates between 300 to 560 grams.
DIET
They are principally insectivores; they also feed on fruit, sap and other types of invertebrates and seeds.
REPRODUCTION
They are seasonal breeders, with the females pregnant or with suckling young only from the beginning of January to the end of June. The gEstation period is 140 days. Normally they have a gemellary birth (of individuals not identical) each year.
CURIOSITIES
They have a “cooperative breeding” system, both the male and other members of the group help to transport the young. The adult individuals remain with the family and help to raise the descendants of the breeding pair (to the detriment of their own reproduction) and, although it favours learning, as a result they have one of the highest breeding rates of all primates.
