VALAQUIA LAMB

CHARACTERISTICS
They measure up to 1’5m and reach 90-120cm. The tail is broad and thickened, in order to accumulate reserve fatty substances. They weigh around 80 kg. The general colouring is variable, from skin the colour of light to dark brown, with intermixed white hairs in some cases. There is sexual dimorphism, based on the presence or not of thick horns curved back into almost a circle.
DIET
Grass and low leaves from vascular plants..
REPRODUCTION
The gestation period lasts 150-160 days. 1-2 young are born each time. Just before the birth the females separate from the herd and seek an inaccessible spot in which to give birth. Suckling lasts for 4 months; sexual maturity is reached at 2 years in females and 5 years in males.
CURIOSITIES
They live in flocks to defend themselves better from their predators, wolves, lynxes, leopards and bears. In the summer they descend into the valleys to graze, while in the winter they frequent high altitudes, where the escarpments protect them from predators. Their bleats are sibilant and when they are surprised they whistle through the nose.
