RING-TAILED LEMUR


CHARACTERISTICS
Principally grey with white sections, their characteristic feature is their long and bushy tail, which is divided into white and black stripes. The adults may reach a body length of between 45 and 50 centimetres and a weight of 3,5 kilograms. Their tails are longer than their bodies, measuring up to 56cm. They have claws on the second toe of the hind feet, with which they groom themselves.
DIET
Basically fruit, they can also feed on leaves, vegetables.
REPRODUCTION
The mating season is from April to June. Gestation takes around 146 days, resulting in one or two offspring, who are born with full fur and open eyes. During the first two weeks of life, the offspring remain fastened to the mother’s stomach, and thereafter they move over to her back.
CURIOSITIES
They have fifteen different vocalisations which are used to maintain the cohesion of the group during food gathering and to alert the presence of a predator. They leave odorous marks using their genital regions, which are enriched with odorous glands.
