RED-RUFFED LEMUR


CHARACTERISTICS
The body and head measure 51 to 60 cm. in length. The tail measures 55 to 60 cm. Their weight is 3.0 to 4.5 kg. with the average weight of the females being 3.51 Kg. and that of the males 3.47 kg. Their neck has a mane and the face has a snout similar to that of a dogs. The male and female are the same.
DIET
Their diet consists of fruit. They complement their diet with leaves and nectar.
REPRODUCTION
The females only reproduce once a year. The gestation period takes some 102 days. The mothers build a nest with branches and line it with their own fur. The newborns will remain in the nest for some three weeks. There are usually two, or up to three, offspring from each birth.
CURIOSITIES
They remain in family groups. The females are dominant over the males. They have the second loudest cry of any primate, second only to the howler monkey.
