WHITE-CHEEKED TURACO

CHARACTERISTICS
They have bright green plumage, with a dark crest on the head. The bill is orangey-red, the same as the rings which surrounds their eyes. In front of the eyes they have “white cheeks” and two oblique marks on the neck, also white. They measure a little more than 40 centimetres from bill to tail and weigh between 200 and 300 grams.
DIET
They principally feed on fruit.
REPRODUCTION
The turacos begin to come into oestrus in February and can breed until the end of October. The clutch consists of 1 to 3 eggs. Incubation is carried out by both progenitors and tends to last some 22-25 days.
CURIOSITIES
They play an important role in the dispersal of seeds. Their digestion is fast and often incomplete, and they therefore need to eat many times and large quantities of fruit. The wing covers are blue the same as the tail, while the primary feathers are intense red and the bird can only generally be seen whilst in flight.
